Turning Goals Into Unplanned Surprises
That is me in the picture. I was living in Israel and had never seen snow. It only made sense that once it did snow, I would make a small snowman, give him a salute, and store him in our freezer for as long as I could!
I seldom look back at the path I've walked . I find myself constantly looking at the "now" and "what's to come”. I trick my mind, as I feel we are meant to do. I trick it in order to stay grounded. I tell myself, "Ideally, the next few years will look this way or that way." I tell my brain these things, and expect them to follow through.
Then I tell my brain, "Brain, this plan has faults and serious issues, but guess what, God is going to yank those issues out as you go through this." Then I begin to live it out. Once a situation comes up, I think, "Time to adapt and be flexible, because it seems to be weeding season."
This situation could be anything . Let’s say, for example, you find out a University does not have a program you are interested in. Or that you have to move somewhere for a job and extra schooling. Or maybe even that within the next 6 months you have to create a new budget in order to buy a house. These aren't "challenges" as some people might say. I see them as realities. Ones that I must live, but not in a negative determinist way, because I do have other options.
The Apostle Paul said ,
I have learned to be content, whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do everything through him who gives me strength."
- Philippians 4
No, these are not challenges , they are realities that, if dealt with properly, will, in the end, add color to my "self" portrait. How I deal with these situations determines how the painting will come out looking in the end. And in the end the painting will be a reflection of my true identity.
I love how Rob Bell puts it (yes, Rob Bell) :
Because with every action, comment, conversation, we have the choice to invite Heaven or Hell to Earth."
I think Rob Bell is saying that God's will for our lives will be lived out if we invite it in. We invite it in by discerning and deciding. If we just walk it, we will be guided, being nudged from the left and the right. We just need to be accepting of these ‘nudges’, no matter how difficult they are to take in.
When we begin to look at our lives this way, in a more 'narrative' way than just a 'chasing after ambitions' way, we can start to see how these unplanned surprises are like digital snapshots that come together in the end.
You are making the decisions in these situations, so make them great! Put all that you are into them. Loosen up, be flexible , because in this world, the more memorable these digital snapshots are , the more beautiful and memorable the final reflection will be.
