Apps For A Therapist
There tends to be a great deal of background work involved in being a therapist. Utilizing apps lends a helping hand and can be useful when desiring to be organized, efficient, and effective.
Below are a handful of apps I personally use on a daily basis with a quick description of why.
I am always interested in knowing the strength or weakness of my own heart. I utilize this app to track my heartrate. I also use this app to gain raw data of my clients that have high anxiety, stress, and ptsd. Many times a client will be shaky at the beginning of session, with some narration and checking their heartrate, a sense of control and peace enters the room. Checking it at the beginning and end of session allows the client to see evidence of control over their own body.
If you are always driving from office to office, MileIQ will track your miles automatically. It runs in the background and waits for you to swipe left for personal or right for business. It then generates spreadsheets of your data. This is great for tracking miles for tax purposes within your practice or as a self employed sub contractor.
Storing receipts can be the worst. Who works with paper nowadays anyway? Anytime I purchase something I will use with clients or for my office, I store the receipt on the shoeboxed app. The company that made the app actually processes your receipt and makes it searchable. This helps with quarterly taxes, as does MileIQ.
Recording sessions can be a hassle when dealing with old style recorders. QuickVoicePro makes it easy with the ability to email, share, or airdrop your file directly to your desktop or iPad. I use this app when I need to go back and transcribe a session. I know I could invest in transcription apps, but using this method reassures me of any corrections, as well as freshens my memory.
Ever wanted the entire DSM5 in your pocket? While this is the most expensive app, coming in at $65, it has been the best investment I have made. This app gives the ability to search the DSM and easily maneuver through it on your iPad or iPhone. This makes the diagnosing process so much smoother
With this app I fill out, sign, save, and share documents. I fill out my daily reports and request clients to fill out / sign documents with this app. It makes signing off on documents a breeze. Most clients use their finger to sign. I am then able to save or print the document on the spot. Many of my Online clients use this app to sign documents and return them to me.
Any physical document can now be turned into a pdf by simply taking a picture of it. This app digitally scans your photo and turns it into a scanned copy. Grabbing forms on the fly is simple. I use this hand in hand with CudaSign. I find that using ScannerPro to grab the PDF and then opening it with CudaSign is much more crisp than using CudaSign to take the pic. Because of this app I have hundreds of PDF resources I email to clients within or outside of session.
Pages allows me to complete my client notes, which are password protected by iCloud and my iPad/iPhone fingerprint (Double lock Hipaa). I can access these notes at any time. I also use Pages along side photo editing apps such as Studio Plus to create ads.
This app offers many mindfulness techniques you can use within sessions. I usually conduct these techniques myself, but refer to the app before hand. I have suggested clients utilize this app outside of sessions as homework as well. This app offers psychoeducation, practices, nutrition aid, and the ability to belong to a bigger community of those who struggle with stress.
Another app for stress is MoveForward. This app grants you the ability to track stress levels and chart your progress. Whether it's for you as a therapist, or the client, this app is useful in gaining raw data. By answering questions within the app, you are provided assessment, practices, and a support system if help is needed.
This anxiety tracker offers a way to understand your own triggers as well as the triggers of clients. It also offers tools which you can add to your anxiety toolkit. Tools cover "physical relaxation" "mental relaxation" "health" as well as a "small steps" section which offers tid bits of aid. I personally use the "Help for anxiety NOW" section of this app which provides 3 interactive practices to reduce anxiety on the spot.
When filling out treatment plans it helps to have some strong resources. I pack my kindle full of Treatment Planners. The two I use most often is the "Complete Adult Psychotherapy Treatment Planner" and the " Child Psychotherapy Treatment Planner". There are many others.
